"Kohl und Mut" – was aus dem Portugiesischen ins Deutsche übersetzt beinahe wie eine sozialistische Arbeitsparole klingt, beschreibt die Lebensrealität von Menschen, die am Rande der Gesellschaft oftmals für ihr schieres Überleben kämpfen. Häufig sind es Emigranten aus ehemaligen Kolonien Portugals (wie z.B. Angola, Mosambik, Brasilien oder den Kapverden), die in trostlos wuchernden Siedlungen in der Peripherie Lissabons wohnen. Auf den sie umgebenden Brachflächen haben sie damit begonnen, den Boden urbar zu machen, um ihre kärglichen Einkünfte mit selbstgezogenem Gemüse aufzubessern. Provisorische Hütten und Zäune umgrenzen kleine, private Areale, die zumeist ohne amtliche Genehmigung errichtet wurden. Vielerorts werden sie solange geduldet, wie kein neuer Eigentümer Ansprüche auf das Land erhebt, oder aber bis die Regierung willkürlich und ohne Voranmeldung Bagger beordert und alles niederreißen lässt, um der illegalen Landnahme – wenigstens symbolisch – Einhalt zu gebieten.

Lioba Keuck hat für "Couve e Coragem" in den Armutsgürteln der Hauptstadt recherchiert, die Menschen nach ihren Geschichten befragt. In einer Mischung aus Texten, Portraits, künstlerischen und eher dokumentarisch anmutenden Fotografien verdichtet sich visuell der Versuch von Menschen, ihren Lebensverhältnissen eine in mehrerer Hinsicht positive Perspektive abzugewinnen: Die Arbeit in und mit der Erde verschafft ihnen nicht nur ein soziales Miteinander und die Aufbesserung ihrer Mahlzeiten, sondern vermittelt Sinn und Bestätigung – etwas, das sie in einem Milieu von Arbeitslosigkeit oder bestenfalls schlecht bezahlter Hilfsarbeit selten bis gar nicht erfahren.

"Cabbage and Courage" —what sounds almost like a socialist slogan, designed to enhance work ethics, describes the reality of people’s lives who are fighting for mere survival at the margins of Portuguese society. Most of them are immigrants from former Portuguese colonies (e.g. Angola, Mozambique, Brazil, or the Cape Verde Islands). They live in the desolate settlements that are growing rampantly in the periphery of Lisbon. On the abandoned areas that surround them, they have begun to cultivate the land in order to supplement their meager incomes with homegrown vegetables. Makeshift huts and fences circumscribe small, private areas. Usually they were built without official authorization. In many places, they are tolerated as long as there is no owner who stakes a claim to the land, or until the government, haphazardly and without prior notice, tears everything down with excavators—as a symbolic demonstration of governmental power in the face of this illegal land appropriation.

For her work "Couve e Coragem", Lioba Keuck has done research in the poverty belt of the capital, asking the people to tell her their stories. In a mixture of text, portraits, artistic and documentary photographs, the effort of these people to gain a positive outlook on their living conditions in several ways, becomes apparent: The work on and with the earth does not simply provide for social cohesion and better meals, but conveys meaning and purpose — a rare experience in a context of unemployment, or in the best case, poorly paid menial work.
