Daniel Stubenvoll does not shrink from asking the most essential questions: Where does the new come from, and how does it come into being? In the cellar of his university, an alleged answer is whispered to him: everything starts with a foundation block — the basis for any kind of work. Daniel Stubenvoll approaches this basis with his camera. This work, the artist is sure of it, has to be neat, it has to resemble a building. Thus, he solicits eleven of his classmates from different disciplines into creating a work about this foundation block.

Out of these works and his own foundation block photographs, he curates a fictitious exhibition and a real artist’s book in which he documents the origination process, the foundation block works and the exhibition.

These 11 new foundation blocks are the point of departure and the source of inspiration for his "Neat Work". Citing the works of his classmates, he creates new pictures. He mixes their works, merges them with his own. The viewer is witness to the genesis of a work that is confronted with productive failure, while coming to grips with the strengths of photography as a medium.
